Questions and Answers for Candidates

Q. Why should I register with Mum's the Word?
A: It’s free and as well as giving you fantastic opportunities for the best jobs in the area, we offer continuous support from start to end. Whether it’s getting a DBS check, first aid certificate or if you just need some nanny counsel, we’re here to help!
Q. How do I apply for one of Mum's the Word®'s positions?

A. You can register with one of our branches, which is in the area you wish to work in. Let us know what you are looking for. Alternatively, if you have seen a position on our jobs page that interests you, please do press the “how to apply” button and send us your cv.

Q. What do you need from me to register with Mum's the Word®?

As you can appreciate, security is paramount for our clients. Some checks can take a while, so to prevent you from missing out on opportunities we make sure to carry out checks as quickly as possible when you first register with us. When you apply for a job through Mum’s the Word®, you will need to provide us with:

  • A CV
  • Qualification Certificates
  • First Aid Qualification Evidence
  • Current Valid DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service check – previously known as CRB check or police check) – normally Enhanced.
  • Details of at least two referees who we can contact for references
  • Evidence of address
  • ID
  • Passport or other approved document showing your eligibility to reside and work in the UK
  • Driving licence

You will also need to attend an interview with Mum’s the Word® to be shortlisted for a job.

Q. How do I sort out my tax and national insurance?

A. For most jobs advertised at Mum’s the Word®, your new employer is responsible for Tax, NI and pension. For tutor jobs, depending on the circumstances, you may need to be self-employed. Details of how to register as self-employed can be found here.

Q Who pays for my Ofsted registration?
A. It’s quite often a new client will pay the Ofsted registration fee, but for nannies, it is your responsibility to make sure your First Aid, DBS, insurance and qualifications are up to date. If they’re going to lapse during a placement, you must make sure you take the necessary steps to ensure they are renewed in good time.
Q Why should I not exchange contact details during the interview and selection process with clients?

A. It is an express term of our contract with you as a candidate that you don’t provide your direct contact details at interviews with clients or at any point before a job offer is made. The process can get very messy when they are not followed as they should be. If you were to provide your contact details to clients outside of the Mum’s the Word® process prior to a job offer, you would be in breach of our agreed terms and conditions, which could result in legal action being taken against you. We’d hate that as much as you would, so please don’t!
